We extend our condolences to Jo's family. When I first met Jim he did not talk very much about his family. But, he did mention Jo as an inspiration for us all. As a child he had been impressed with her being a pilot and later by her Peaces Corp. activity.
I only met Jo once and found her to be a wonderful conversationalist. We stayed in contact with her at the holidays and always enjoyed her letters.
For Jim this is the last link with the generation before him.

Mrs. Spencer was a powerful force in shaping my life. I was her student in 4th grade. I remember so much from that wonderful year. She has us learn the paintings of the Masters. We debated what was better, the jungle or the desert, we put on a play about Tom Sawyer, we looked for fossils and arrowheads at the VA and we cleaned up Sucker Brook. Later on, Rev. Spencer pastored our little church in Cheshire. My mother, Barbara Outhouse, worked with Mrs. Spencer in the Canandaigua School District.
I have had a life-long interest in the environment and graduated with an AAS in Conservation from FLCC. I know my enthusiasm was sparked from my 4th grade experiences and learning. I went on to become a teacher, and my favorite grade to teach was my 4th graders. I tried to model myself after that wonderful teacher I remembered so well. Mrs. Spencer made a difference in my life and the lives of so many others. I will never forget her. May God comfort you in your loss.
Sincerely,
Priscilla Crawford

Terry & Tim, It has been years since I seen you both. My brother Bob and I were your former neighbors on N. Pleasant St. I want to express my sympathy to you and your family on your loss. Your mother was a kind person who accomplished many things in her life time. When my father passed away in 2008 she sent a card with a donation to Happy Tails in his in name. On behalf of my brother, and our next door neighbor Dick Anderson our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I'll always remember Mrs. Spencer as one of the best yet hardest teacher I've ever had. I was in her class in 1967-1968. To this day I still recall things that I learned that year.
We all did a report on Japan and then got to go to the Trenholm for a meal.
I'm pretty sure that was the year we went to see the observatory/telescope out at the park in Bristol (unfortunately it was a cloudy NIGHT)
That year we were going to do the play ANNIE GOT YOUR GUN in the spring but that was the spring that Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy were shot. I remember her saying that that play was not an appropriate one to do because of the recent events so we did RIP VANWINKLE.
She brought a baby alligator to classroom which we kept in a terrarium and had to go home on weekends because the heat in the classroom wasn't on over the weekends. We even painted an alligator on the floor of the classroom with Tempera paint.
We had an intercom system hooked up to a classmate's home (Mindy Andrews) so that she could participate in class activities. She had a kidney disease which prevented her from attending school the majority of the year.
She really made an impression on all us 4th graders and I know I am not the only one who remembers what a great teacher she was.

I was blessed to have been able to share time caring for your mom at horizons. What a wonderful gentle person she was always full of experences of her life and love for her family. I admire what she did in her lifetime. Also I found out that she was married to the minister of my church in Rushville many years ago. Which he was also a wonderful man. How lucky their family was to have them both. As well as my family and myself were to enjoy them too. They are remembered with love. Thank you for sharing them with all of us. Judy W

Jo was the most inspirational woman I've ever known. She was always there for me to lend a story or an ear, was a great neighbor and friend, and was like a great grandmother to my kids. She was the kind of person who makes you want to do more with your life in order to make a difference in this world! Awesome lady. Our condolences to Terry, Tim and the rest of her family.
