Florence T. Gilkey
Canandaigua- Sadly, Florence "Flo" Tobin Gilkey, 84 years young, passed away June 14, 2021 after a short devastating illness.
She leaves behind a loving spouse of 37 years, Liz B. VonHacht, two daughters, Joanne (Michael) Mclaughlin, Elkton, MD, Susan (Donald) Lushis, Milton, DE; two granddaughters, Erin and Shannon and a great grandson, Carter.
Flo was preceded in death by her son, Michael Gilkey who died suddenly in 2016.
When Flo started her lifelong career in nursing she worked her way up the educational ladder, first as an LPN, at Wilmington Hospital in Delaware. She continued as an RN at Elsmere Veterans Hospital where she got her Masters in Gerontology. She and Liz then moved to Canandaigua, NY. Flo continued her education and enrolled in the University of Rochester's Nurse Practitioner program. Graduating with the first class of NP from the program. She was the first NP to work for F.F. Thompson Hospital Continuing Care Unit, setting the ground work for following practitioners. After retiring from F.F. Thompson Hospital Flo continued working as an NP for the Rushville Clinic in Rushville, NY, seeing adult patients of all ages. She finally retired at the age of 74 to spend more time at home with Liz, who also retired as an RN, doing many home projects and caring for their dogs.
Flo will be deeply missed by family and patients alike.
In keeping with Flo's wishes there will be no services at this time.
