Obituary of James R. Hollabaugh
James R. Hollabaugh, born March 3rd, 1933 in Danville, Pennsylvania passed away peacefully in the presence of his three loving daughters in Clifton Springs, on January 27th, 2025.
James, known to most as Jim, was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was an active member of the Rotary Club, and a lifelong member of the Methodist Church.
Born to parents Lillian and Edward Hollabaugh, Jim joined the Coast Guard after his High School graduation, and was stationed in New York City from 1951-1954 as a storekeeper, jumpstarting his career in the retail industry. After attending Penn State for 2 years, supported by the GI Bill, Jim married his sweetheart, Geraldine (Gerry), on June 10th, 1956 in Sunbury, PA.
His career in retail started early in his life, beginning with his work at the Newberry Department Store while he was still in High School, and continued on for the rest of his working life. He began working for JCPenney in Auburn NY in 1956, and took great pride in his job, working as an Assistant Manager in Oil City PA before becoming the Store Manager in Canandaigua NY, and finally in Circleville OH in 1985, eventually retiring in 1992.
Jim devoted himself not only to his career but to his family above all, establishing roots in Canandaigua with Gerry and their three daughters Cheryl, Linda and Diane after relocating from Oil City. Upon Jim’s retirement in 1992, Jim and Gerry used their newfound free time traveling across the US and Europe, enjoying cruises, trips to Hawaii, and other family vacations with their daughters and their families.
Jim was also an avid bowler and enjoyed playing canasta and other card games with Gerry over the years at home and during their travels. He loved watching and listening to baseball, football, and basketball games, especially the Yankees, Buffalo Bills, and any of the Penn State and Ohio State teams.
He is pre-deceased by his parents, Lillian and Edward, his brother Robert, his beloved wife Geraldine, and various other loved ones. Jim is survived by his daughters Cheryl Sterling (Steve), Linda McNeill (Willie) and Diane Kemp (John), grandchildren Sara, Laura, Chris, Zach, Amber, Jarrett, Paige, Brandon and Shelby, and six great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations on Jim’s behalf to The House of John, in Clifton Springs NY, where Jim spent his final days in great comfort and peace.
