Obituary of Jean Rayburn
Jean (Fleming-Chaapel) Rayburn
On April 1, 2025, Jean peacefully passed away surrounded by family at Light Hill Comfort Care Home in Canandaigua, New York. She was born to Frank and Thelma Fleming May 18, 1940 in Horseheads NY. After graduating Class Salutatorian at Southside High School in Elmira, Jean married Russell Chaapel and moved to Bloomfield NY. Jean and Russ raised three children and became very involved in community organizations. Upon Russell’s leukemia diagnosis, Jean focused on helping him through his difficult medical journey until his passing.
Jean was a homemaker, teacher’s aide at Bloomfield Central Schools and thereafter an Executive Secretary to the Director of Thompson Health. Jean remarried in 1993 to Richard Rayburn and they began traveling the world.
Jean’s love of family and friends was immeasurable. She was an avid cook, gardener and crafter. Her passion for people, flowers and entertaining created an endless circle of friends through Church, Thompson Health and multiple local organizations.
Jean was predeceased by her husbands Russell Chaapel and Richard Rayburn. She is survived by her sister Jane (Chuck) Pruyne, son Timothy (Denise) Chaapel, daughters Teresa (Gregg) Cator, and Lisa (David) Lawson, along with multiple step children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Jean will always be remembered for her kindness, dedication and unwavering love for her family and friends. She has left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing her.
A Celebration of Life will take place Saturday, April 5th at 1 PM at the East Bloomfield United Methodist Church, 2 Park Place Bloomfield, NY.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Light Hill by mailing a check to 5160 Parrish Street Ext Canandaigua, NY 14424 or donate online at lighthillhome.org. Donations can also be made to the East Bloomfield United Methodist Church.
