Patrick J. Whalen Obituary

Patrick Jude Whalen, of Canandaigua, New York, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend passed away on April 9, 2025, at home.

Patrick, 73, a proud native of Sackets Harbor, New York, was born to Kendall and Marjorie Kay Whalen on November 13, 1951. Upon moving to the Canandaigua area, he promptly met and married the love of his life Nancy Mae Cole on June 2nd, 1973, in St. Patrick's Church, Victor, New York.

Patrick was a 1969 graduate of Sackets Harbor Central School, where he was, and remains for many, a hometown hero on the baseball field. He was a catcher and a noted slugger earning the title of varsity MVP in his freshman year. He loved all things sports, especially baseball, golf, and bowling. He and Nancy were regulars on Saturday nights in the mixed league at Roseland Bowl for years with teammates Sonny and Eleanor and later on Tuesday night the ARC league with his son Shawn and good friends Tony and Jim. For 30+ years, Thursday nights were dedicated to league play at Cragie Brae Golf Club in Scottsville with golf buddies Teddy and Stubby. He was a lifelong fan of the New York Yankees and New York Giants. But nothing gave Patrick more pride and joy than watching his sons perform either on the field or on the stage.

Patrick worked 25 years for Eastman Kodak which concluded with a three-month trip to China, a once in a lifetime experience, he valued greatly.

Surviving besides his wife, Nancy, are their sons Shawn Patrick Whalen (Veronica "Ronni" Contreras) of Farmington and Ryan Thomas Whalen of Phelps, grandchildren Derek Ryan, Rylind Valerie, and Nina June Whalen, all of Farmington, two brothers Edward Whalen of Sackets Harbor and Kendall (Anne) Whalen of Farmington, two sisters Loretta Stamps of Adams, New York and Mary Leta (Daniel) Corboy of Sackets Harbor. Many in-laws also survive, Mary Jane Whalen of Chittenango, Evelyn (William) Freeland of Canandaigua, James DeWick of Florida, Donna Gurnell of Lima, Beverly (Douglas) French of Victor, Carol Stanley of Canandaigua, and Brenda Gonzalez of Canandaigua. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Pre-deceased are his parents, his mother and father-in-law Marguerite and Gordon Cole, his stepmother Alfrieda Whalen, his brother Charles Whalen, his brothers-in-law David Stamps, Robert DeWick, Daniel Cole, Dennis Cole, and Richard Gurnell, and his sister-in-law Marlou DeWick.
