Sue Ann Raymond Obituary

Sue Ann Raymond (nee Juda)

Sue Ann Raymond was a beloved educator, community leader, and friend whose kindness touched countless lives. Sue passed away on November 6th. She is predeceased by her parents, Felix and Jacqueline Juda, her brothers, Peter and Michael, her husband Richard “Dick” and stepson Rick. She is survived by her sisters, Gail Fowler and Beth Bradford, brothers, Paul and David, and Dick’s children: RaeAnn Jacek, Valyrie (David) Yourch, Brenda Raymond, and Michelle (Rick) Raymond. Sue is also survived by eight grandsons, six great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Sue grew up in Irondequoit and remained in the Finger Lakes area for her entire life. Her life was dedicated to education, enrichment, and service to all those around her. For her entire teaching career, she taught in the Rush-Henrietta School District where she also coached the girl’s swim team and synchronized swimming, creating yearly athletic performances with both beauty and humor. Sue was a certified swim official, taught prospective officials, and organized the officiating schedules for the Section V area schools. She served on the Section V Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame nominating committee and was herself inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2010.

Early in their relationship, at the encouragement of her husband Dick, Sue became an avid sailor. They raced in their Flying Dutchman named Pooh for many years with Dick as captain and Sue his crew. Sue was a member of the Canandaigua Yacht club for over fifty years, taught sailing along with Dick, became the club’s first female commodore, and even after giving up sailing continued to be fully involved in the club and its governance, serving as the chairman of the board of governors at the time of her death.

Sue was active with ONYA, the Ontario/Yates Fund for Women and Girls, an organization that provides grants to non-profit programs that have a positive impact on the economic and social status of women and girls in Ontario and Yates counties. She was instrumental in fundraising efforts and screening grant applicants. She was the President of the Board at the time of her death.

Although Sue didn’t teach in Rochester, her husband did and through him, she became active in the RRTA (Rochester Retired Teachers Association) Dress A Girl / Savvy Sewers who met monthly to create dresses for girls who might not otherwise have one. Even though Sue was not a sewist she was lending a hand in other ways: cutting fabric, packing and organizing.

Sue was active with the Granger Homestead, serving on its Board of Trustees and was an active co-chair for the Festival of Trees.

It has been said that “anytime you needed help with something, she volunteered”. She cared about people, about traditions, and about doing what’s right. This is one reason why she was a nominee for the Ontario County Athena Award in 2023. She never bragged of her achievements but let her actions show her commitment to the service of others. She will be missed by her family and friends.
