Martha A. Smith, 87, of Canandaigua, NY, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2026, surrounded by loved ones, at the M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center in Canandaigua, NY.
She was born in the village of Bath, NY, where she grew up with a deep love for music, especially piano music. She became an accomplished pianist and played for her family, friends, and many others who enjoyed her musical flair with Christmas Melodies, Golden Oldies, and Inspirational Hymns. When she could no longer play her beloved piano, she could always be found listening to instrumental piano tunes. She also had a love for travel and for reading all types of books. Her favorite pastime was learning about the history of our country as this coincided with her enjoyment in the American Legion in the Finger Lakes area.
The greatest love she had was for her numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. To see her eyes light up and her face break into a wide smile whenever she saw them or talked with them was to see pure joy.
She spent most of her life as a caregiver in one form or another. She had been a nursing assistant for many years, caring for our heroes at the Canandaigua Veterans' Medical Center. When she retired, she realized her love of continuous learning. She obtained her associate's degree at the age of 71, from Finger Lakes Community College.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ivan Smith, in 1999.
She is survived by her children Charles Ball (Elaine), Randy Ball (Jill), Patricia Ball (Gloria), Evelyn Doan (Neil), Daniel Ball (Le), Diane Crofoot, stepdaughter Gail Butler (Charles) and several grandchildren, step grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
In keeping with her wishes, no formal services will be provided. There will be a family Celebration of Life in the summer.
The family is grateful to the caregivers and staff of the Meadows Unit at M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center and are appreciative for their compassionate care and support for the past two years, and especially these last few days.
In honoring their mother, the family request in lieu of floral tributes, if you are inclined, donations can be made to the M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center in Canandaigua, NY. We thank you, as she is now at peace.
