Robert J. Morrice Obituary
Robert J. Morrice, age 83, passed away peacefully, with his wife by his side, on Saturday, April 4, after a long illness.
Bob is survived by his devoted wife of 34 years, Felicia (Hunter) Morrice; his brother and business partner, John Morrice; his sister, Dorothy (Creig) Clark; his daughters, Barb (Terry) Palese; Robin (Howie) Myers; and a granddaughter, Marissa Myers. Also, his sister-in-law, Pat (Darwin) Hunter-Kysor; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Clara (Miller) Morrice; a sister-in-law, Carrie Hunter; and an infant niece, Riley Hunter-Kysor. He will be sorely missed by his family, friends, and favorite feline, Elsa, who loved her Daddy's lap.
Bob was born in Canandaigua, NY, and graduated from Canandaigua Academy, Class of 1962. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1964-1970, receiving an Honorable Discharge. Bob was a partner in the family business, Morrice Brothers Excavating. His accuracy and precision while operating excavating equipment was evident on every job, as was his "Do the job the right way" attitude. Morrice Brothers Excavating was often sought by various local builders to do their foundation work, miscellaneous digging, and demolition work. Decades were spent working with Yautzy & Sawyer Builders, in particular. Bob also spent nearly 60 years plowing snow in the Canandaigua area; having many of the same customers over all that time. Robert Morrice & Sons, then Morrice Brothers Excavating, dug the foundation for many well-known buildings, businesses, and homes in the area, including the "new" Thompson Hospital, Elementary & Primary Schools, Notre Dame Retreat House, Granger Homestead outbuildings, Crosman Airguns in Bloomfield, Lisk Manufacturing in Clifton Springs, and hundreds of homes and cottages all along Canandaigua Lake.
He was a lifelong NY Giants' fan; normally, watching every game with the "Cheshire Crew" on Knapp Road. As he was married to a lifelong Dallas Cowboys' fan, football season in their home was often very interesting. He also rooted for Syracuse Orange football. Bob was a member of the very first Canandaigua Academy Wrestling team, beginning in 1959, and was CA's very first 154-pound wrestler; being immensely proud of that fact. He was the recipient of the 3rd Annual Mayor's Trophy for Canandaigua Academy's Outstanding Wrestler of 1961-1962. He continued to support CA Wrestling by attending the annual Alumni Night matches. He was also awarded the U.S. American Legion Outstanding Football Player Award trophy for 1961.
Bob was known for his easy-going, laid-back personality. He was a life-long "regular" at Patty's Place, Lafayette Restaurant, and the Niagara Bar & Restaurant; where he enjoyed his morning coffee, catching up with many of his longtime friends, and sharing a "cold one" at the end of the workday.
The family would like to acknowledge the M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center for the exceptional care that Bob received during the past year; especially, the STU and Lakeview Avenues.
Friends may call Friday, April 10, from 1:00-5:00 p.m. at Fuller Funeral Home, Inc. 190 Buffalo Street, Canandaigua, NY. A 5:00 p.m. funeral service will follow at the funeral home.
Donations may be made in Bob's name to the UR Medicine Home Care Foundation, Box 270032, Rochester, NY 14627; "Designate my gift for: UR Medicine Hospice - Ontario-Yates Counties (A11485)".
