Robert S. Calman Obituary
Robert Sidney “Bob” Calman
September 26, 1936 – April 13, 2026
Robert Sidney “Bob” Calman, a man known for his hard work, dedication, and deep love for family and community, passed away leaving a lasting legacy in the lives of all who knew him.
Bob was born on September 26, 1936, in Elmira, New York, and graduated from Gorham High School in 1955. He went on to serve proudly in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957, receiving an Honorable Discharge. During his service, he was stationed in France and participated in the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, an experience he carried with pride throughout his life.
After returning home, Bob began a long and dedicated career with Eastman Kodak, where he worked from 1958 until his retirement in 1991. Never one to slow down, he partnered with his son Todd to establish Tariff Affiliates in 1991. Throughout his life, Bob was known for his strong work ethic and unwavering reliability.
Bob devoted his life to his family, his work, his community, and the many hands-on projects that kept both his mind and spirit active. A builder at heart, he constructed more than 200 homes in the Canandaigua area, leaving a lasting imprint on the community—including Calman Place, a street named in his honor. His commitment to living well and embracing life fully also inspired him to create a salsa that was produced and sold in health food stores. He also remained connected to his roots, spending time at the family’s Hopewell Center Calman Homestead.
Bob found joy in routine and simple pleasures. He bowled for over 50 years at Roseland Bowl in Canandaigua, forming lifelong friendships along the way. In later years, he especially cherished quiet moments—tending his garden, watching sunsets, and enjoying a margarita on the beach in Mexico with loved ones.
He was known for his warmth, steady presence, and gift for connecting with others, always ready to share a story, laugh or a memory. He often said, “Life is sharing happiness with others,” and he lived that belief every day.
Bob was predeceased by his parents, Sidney R. Calman in 1985, and Martha Johnson Silverton in 2001. He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Betty Ann Calman; his son, Todd Calman of Canandaigua; and his daughter, Cindy (John) Ludwig of Parrish, Florida. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Aaron (Jennifer) Ludwig of O’Fallon, Missouri; Erica Calman of New York City; and Jordan Calman of Canandaigua; his great-grandchildren, Brandon (Maggie) Ludwig of Affton, Missouri and Aidan Ludwig of St. Louis, Missouri; and his great-great-granddaughters, Charlotte and Aspyn of Affton, Missouri.
He is further survived by his siblings: Lois (Jeremy) Thomas of Gorham, NY; Ronald Calman and Thomas Calman of Hopewell Center, NY; and Barbara (Charles) Eckert of Rochester, NY, along with many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Bob will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
