Stephen William Finnick, 77, of Canandaigua, New York, passed away peacefully at his home on July 23, 2026, surrounded by his loving family, after an 18-year battle with cancer.

Born on October 7, 1948, in Canandaigua, New York, Steve spent his entire life in the community he proudly called home. After graduating from Canandaigua Academy in 1967, he answered the call to serve his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam era. Following his military service, Steve built a successful career in construction. In his mid-50s, he fulfilled a lifelong dream by starting his own construction business, where his hard work, integrity, and craftsmanship earned the trust and respect of countless friends, clients, and neighbors.

Steve will be remembered for his wisdom, quick wit, generosity, and unwavering devotion to his family. He found his greatest joy outdoors, whether duck hunting, tending to his beehives, chopping wood, or spending time on Canandaigua Lake. Some of his happiest moments were the simplest: sitting on the porch with family and friends, sharing stories, laughter, and a cold drink. Above all else, Steve took tremendous pride in providing for his family, and there was nothing more important to him than the people he loved.

His generosity extended far beyond those closest to him. In 2016, Steve made the courageous decision to participate in a clinical trial for CAR T-cell therapy. Knowing the treatment carried significant risks, including the possibility that it could cost him his life, he chose to move forward with the hope that it might help him while also advancing research that could one day save the lives of future cancer patients. Helping others, even in the midst of his own battle, was simply who Steve was.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Christine Finnick; his son, Ryan Finnick; his niece, Kimberly Dudley; his half-brother, Stevie Finnick; as well as many extended family members, lifelong friends, and all those whose lives were enriched by his kindness, guidance, and friendship.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Tom Finnick, Jamie Finnick, and David Finnick.

Throughout his 18-year battle with cancer, Steve faced each challenge with remarkable strength, resilience, and determination. His love for his family never wavered, and his quiet courage left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. His legacy lives on in the values he instilled, the work of his hands, the lives he touched, and the countless memories shared by those fortunate enough to know and love him.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Reagan, Dr. Barr, Dr. Becker, Dr. Mendler, and the entire staff at Wilmot Cancer Center for their exceptional care, compassion, and unwavering dedication throughout Steve's cancer journey. Your kindness, expertise, and support meant more to our family than words can express.
