Obituary of Betty Jones

Betty G. Jones Canandaigua, NY- Betty Jones, formerly of Antwerp, passed away September 9, 2015 at her home in Canandaigua. Born May 13, 1920 in Detroit, MI, daughter of Claude W. and Helen West Gates, she was raised in Antwerp after the family moved there in the early 1920’s. She graduated from Antwerp High School in 1937 and From Deibert’s Business School in 1939. She also completed three course in photography at JCC. Mrs. Jones, a secretary, was employed by The Borden Company at Antwerp, the Agricultural Insurance Company at Watertown, the Marine Midland Bank, Antwerp Branch and Indian River Central School, Antwerp Branch. She married Samuel C. Jones of Murray, KY on October, 9 1942 in Columbus, GA at the Presbyterian Church with Rev. Calvin Reid officiating. While her husband was in the service, they lived in Pinehurst, NC and DeRidder, LA until he was sent overseas. In 1946 they bought the Frank Brown farm on the Spragueville Road and lived there most of their married lives. Mrs. Jones retired in 1977 after 16 years at the Indian River Central School, Antwerp Branch. After retiring, she and her husband spent several winters in Clearwater, FL. Mrs. Jones was a member of The First Congregational Church of Antwerp, a Deaconess and a Sunday school teacher for many years and a member of the Congregational Women’s Fellowship. She was a 50 year member of Antwerp Order of the Eastern Star 189, a member of Educational Secretaries Association, a member of the Adirondack Council and a Girl Scout Leader. She enjoyed photography, painting, biking, skiing, reading and traveling. Mrs. Jones is survived by her two daughters and their husbands, Betty Lou and Dan Palmeri of Canandaigua; Mary Jane and Kenneth Pellegrino of Brookfield, CT; son and his wife, Samuel, Jr. and Bobbi of Greene, NY; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and two nieces. She was predeceased by her husband, Sam; sisters, Jane Dane of Gouverneur and Louise DeVoy of Florida. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Antwerp. Arrangements are under the care of Fuller Funeral Home, Inc. Canandaigua. Donations may be made to The First Congregational Church, 59 Depot St. Antwerp, NY 13608.
