Obituary of Katherine Elizabeth Mitchell

Katherine Elizabeth Mitchell known to all as Liz left this world on November 7, 2023, two days before her 79th birthday, with her beloved family at her bedside. Liz was number six of the nine children born to Mary and Bill Stambach of Pioneer Rd., Shortsville, on November 9, 1944. After graduating from Red Jacket Central School in 1963, Liz pursued a nursing career, graduating from the Rochester School of Practical Nursing in 1967. Her career led her to various area hospitals culminating in her passion for geriatric nursing and retiring from Hospice caregiving. On September 23, 1970 she became Mrs. Boysie Mitchell. Two daughters, Mary and Kate were born and then four grandchildren, Cedric Mitchell, Sophia, Daniel and Dwight Carter. Liz basked in her love for her children, grandchildren, extended family, many friends, and above all her Catholic faith. We all knew Lizzie's strong Republican views, her cheering for her teams (go Giants and Yankees), and her love of God. In fact, if we had a God question or a special prayer request we went to Lizzie, she never failed us. She would end a phone call or a text with "Say your prayers, I love you." Liz was a longstanding member of St. Dominic's in Shortsville, spearheading the Friday Holy Hour. Liz was preceded in death by her husband, Boysie in 1997; her parents, Mary and Bill Stambach along with brothers, Robert, John, and Chris Stambach; sisters, Ellen Winchell and Sophia Bayno; nieces, Ann Winchell, Nicole Casellas and nephew, Richard Winchell. Liz is survived by her daughter, Mary Elizabeth Mitchell, of Buffalo; grandson, Cedric, of Shortsville; daughter, Kate Carter (Dwight); granddaughter, Sophia; grandsons, Daniel and Dwight Jr., of Geneva. She is also survived by her three siblings, Margaret (George) Hanville, Paul (Cynthia) Stambach, and Mary Lawrence. Liz leaves a void with her many nieces, nephews, and great grand nieces and nephews. The family would like to express our sincere gratitude to the House of John, 14 Spring Street, Clifton Springs, NY. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to this wonderful end of life home experience. Also, we thank the several volunteers of family and friends who gave their love and time to Liz when most needed. A 12 pm memorial Mass will be held Saturday, November 11, at St. Dominic's Church, 97 W. Main St. Shortsville, NY 14548. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery.
