William Courtney Jr.

Obituary of William L. Courtney Jr.

William Courtney, age 89, of Canandaigua, NY passed away peacefully on January 12, 2024. William (Bill) was born June 30, 1934, in Perry, NY. In 1959 he married Sylvia, his partner of 63 years until her passing in December of 2022. They shared life and love while raising a family and making a home in several locations across the country. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Clarkson University in 1956 and went on to earn his master’s degree in the field from the University of Rochester. Bill’s career included engineering positions with Garlock, Pratt and Whitney and Kordite, which would later become Mobil Chemical and eventually ExxonMobil. He climbed the ranks at ExxonMobil becoming a plant manager in New Jersey and then national purchasing manager for their plastics division located in Pittsford, NY. True to his love of learning, upon retiring at the age of 58, he completed a Certified Financial Planner course to better manage his finances. Bill was an avid golfer and enjoyed Barbershop singing and tackling home improvement projects big and small. Despite his busy career, Bill was a dedicated father, always ready to coach little league or teach his sons how to work with tools. When his wife, Sylvia, became ill, he was her compassionate protector and caregiver, always by her side. Bill is predeceased by his father William Courtney, Sr., mother, Catherine Courtney, sister, Jean Benham and great-grandson Oliver Courtney. Bill is survived by his sons William (Kathy) Courtney III of Palmyra, Daniel (Marcelina) Courtney of Hilton and Mark (Stacey) Courtney of Middletown, DE; sister Patricia Chapin of Honeoye Falls; grandchildren Daniel Courtney, Alexa (Alex Goettel) Courtney, Theodore Courtney, Andrew Courtney, Emma Courtney and Michael Courtney.
