Dear Rivers Family,
we are very sorry to hear that Riv passed away.
All our staff at the Rheinblick loved him very much! Whenever he came over to get his soup they all loved chatting with him and some of the girls even got hugs! He had great stories to tell and I am sure Rheinblick will never get a good neighbor as he was in his shop.
May he rest in peace.
And may God bless you all in this sad time.
Love, Gudrun and Gary

My parents, Joe and Charlotte Butson were great friends with Riv and Alice. Riv will always be remembered for his smile and his willingness to always take time to stop and say hello. He was a icon in the Canandaigua/Crystal Beach area. He will be sadly missed!

I will always have wonderful memories of Riv and his family. Moving across the street was a blessing for us kids at that time. All the kids would play hide and seek in the neighborhood, and I bet that Riv and Alice knew each of our names and where we lived.Every summer we knew that we could go to Riv and he'd be holding 4 movie tickets for us. When I was around 8,I became very sick and had to spend 2 weeks in the hospital. Riv and Alice came to visit and brought a big box of Whitman Chocolates. Even though I was not able to eat at the time, I thought it was the greatest gift. When I was able to go home, and told to rest, the first thing I tried to do, was run across the street to see them.I was too weak and couldn't make it. But Riv and Alice came over to me. Even though I left the state,I have never forgotten all the love and kindness we received from Riv and Alice. Thank you. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

I have many great childhood memories of Riv. Youth night at the Y (enjoying his famous pizza), the roller skating parties, and skating at Red Jacket Park. He was also my bus driver and I still remember his clock at the Playhouse theater. What a great man he was for Canandaigua (especially for the kids) and will be greatly missed by all.

Riv was the barber that we took our sons to for their very first haircut. We have the cutest picture of our oldest with big fat tears streaming down his face sitting in the barber's chair with Riv standing next to him with a smile on his face. We still have that lock of hair and the certificate he gave us. The second son, same thing, same picture. I am so sorry for your loss and so glad our family was able to cross paths with such a loving, kind and gentle man.

Whenever I think of Riv, which I often do, I am flooded with wonderful memories. . .
When one of his customers was hospitalized, Riv would go to the hospital to cut the man's hair and give him a shave . . .
Friday night with Riv's Pizza at the Y . . .
Riv was my bus driver and I always sat on the seat directly behind him . . .
As recently as my last visit to Canandaigua a few years ago, Riv was there to greet me. To welcome me home.
I think I always felt safe with Riv. Physically safe, to be sure, but more than that. I knew, with a child's heart, that Riv cared. That no matter what, he would always be there.
And he will be. He will live on in the memories of the children whose lives he touched. The children he believed in and cared about. The children who are better adults, because of the love he gave them. Because he was never too busy for them.
Thank you, Riv. And I thank his family for sharing him with others. We were blessed to have him in our lives.

This man will always be engraved in my mind. Main street is not the same without him. He never shooed us out, he always had time for kids in the shop. I loved that he always had pennies, that he gave us for the gum ball macnine, but now I know that he did it because he loved the smiles. Rest in peace Riv, job well done.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Riv. Unfortunately I will be out of town this week but wanted to share my thoughts. He was as much a part of our growing up in Canandaigua as the city itself. First haircut, tickets to the Saturday matinee at the Playhouse Theater, the Riv's Barber Shop clock on the theater wall, working with him a the Y. Riv WAS Canandaigua. A great man and a friend to every kid who grew up there. Rest in peace Riv. You will be missed by many.

Riv started cutting my hair when I moved to Canandaigua in 1973. I was fortunate enough to get one last Riv cut before he retired. In between, I enjoyed Riv's jokes, advice and friendship. He was a friend to all. My wife worked with Alice and they all looked forward to Riv bringing in his famous fudge. I managed to try some once - it was great!! After he retired, we would see him Tuesdays at the Lafayette with Alice. It was like the old shop - Riv regaling everyone with stories and jokes. Even strangers loved hearing him. He will be missed by all who knew him. I'll bet he is probably giving the apostles a Riv trim - no doubt they had a shop ready for him. God rest his soul.

What can I really say That one one else has already said? Maybe that Riv was a good guy & great influence on me. I worked for him from 7 grade until I graduated High School in 1988. He was like another father figure for me especially when things weren't so good at home. He always told me I was a strong young lady and to always remember that. He and I had an agreement that he would get me a car on my 16th B-day yet I had to keep my grades up of which I did! Until I had a Seizure 3 days before my Bday. Which led to me not being able to drive at all. Riv told me that "Everything happens for a reason honey. Maybe its just not your time to start driving." As furious as I was because of the situation, he always reminded me that it could be worse and to live each day as they came. I will never forget that. The last time I saw him when I came back home to NY he took down the puzzle on his wall and gave it to me, being that I used to help him with them for years. I still have that puzzle on my wall here in AZ. You will be missed Riv!

Mr. Riv was a primary character in my growing up years! He was my bus driver, he was always at the YMCA and he was a barber to boot! I always felt safe and secure when he was around and he was always so kind and gentle, but firm when he needed to be! Thank you Mr. Riv for being there for us kids! You were a blessing to have around growing up! I know God has a special place for you in Heaven!
