Dear Elmer Family:
I was saddened to read today that Mr. Elmer had passed. He was my Principal at #23 School from the 3rd grade on. I remember once that I had to take an oath on stage in front of everyone with Mr. Elmer at my side. About halfway into the oath I forgot my lines, he handled it with such a cool demeanor that I felt little embarrassment and I knew that he covered for me. As a youngster it meant so much to know that this adult authority figure cared enough about me, a child, to make sure that I wasnt embarrassed was a true defining moment for me.
Now to think back some 30+ years ago, I can only imagine how many young people that Mr. Elmer had positive influence on. You can rest knowing that Mr. Elmer made this place a better place for everyone to live in. I know that I owe some of my success to him! My God have Mercy on his Sole.

Dear Elmer Family,
I was saddened to read about Dick's passing. He was the principal at School #16 when my children were students there. I was very involved in the school, serving on the PTA and volunteering in the classroom. He was held in the highest esteem by parents, teachers and students. I later went to work at the RCSD and he was the standard that I measured other administer's by. He was a wonderful person and will be missed that all who knew him. My thoughts are with all of you.

Dear Family of Richard Elmer,
I'm sorry for the loss of your husband, father, brother, uncle, friend. "Mr. Elmer" was an amazing guy. In 1958 I had the honor of experiencing his initial 5th grade class in the now defunct Walworth, NY Elementary School. He was the coolest thing we had ever seen. He called us "people" and treated us with respect while instilling a lifelong love of literature. His pervasive sense of humor was a ray of light to my foundering, formative intellect. During the 52 years since we met I have thought of him often with gratitude to have been exposed to his style of education and store of personal kindness. I know I am only one of many who have benefitted greatly from his presence on earth.
My sympathy to all his loved ones.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth (Betty) ESuwijn Delaney.

I worked with Dick for many years during his tenure (1998-2002) as Deputy Commissioner at the Colorado Department of Education. As the director of the Educational Technology Center at CDE, I reported directly to him and we spent many hours discussing the state of education in Colorado and nationally. He could always be counted on to see things clearly and challenge me and my colleagues to find workable answers to complex problems. Dick's retirement was a great loss to the State of Colorado. His passing is an even greater loss to everyone who's lives crossed his (whether knowingly or unknowingly). Thank you for sharing him with us for those short four years.

Very saddened to learn of the passing of "Mr. Elmer". Not only was he my fifth grade teacher, but one of my favorites. I'm sure I share that sentiment with many of his former students. My sincerest sympathy to his family.

I was a first grader at # 23 School in 1971 and remember Mr. Elmer fondly. I thought he was a giant, but a gentle man, and in fact took good care of my little ego by laughing at a joke I told him. I also remember being sad because his son had died, a concept I found hard to understand as a little boy. It was nice to see him in the hall, but you didn't want to get sent to his office. The notion of it was enough to make you sit up straight and behave. My thoughts and prayers are with your family Mr. Elmer!
