Obituary of Harold DeMay

Harold E. DeMay Rochester, NY Harold DeMay, longtime resident of Rochester, Honeoye, and Canandaigua, passed away June 15, 2011 at St. John’s Home in Rochester. Born in Rochester to the late John and Elizabeth (Strauss) DeMay, Harry attended Madison High School and R.I.T. In 1941 Harry married Dorothy Sullivan, and with the start of WWII enlisted with the U.S. Army serving in both the North African and European Theaters. He was part of both the Military Police and the Medical Corp. Harry ran the medical labs aboard the HMS Queen Elizabeth, HMS Queen Mary, and USS Andrew Furuseth. He achieved the rank of First Sergeant with the Medical Transportation Corp. He was awarded several service medals including the Presidential Unit Citation for the Battle of the Bulge. Harry worked for the Rochester branch of Collum Acoustical, Henderson-Johnson Construction Company where he was General Manager. Harry loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He and his family built a home on East Lake Rd. in Honeoye where he and Dorothy enjoyed their retirement. His interests included golf, skiing, hunting, fishing, small engine repair, construction, card playing, traveling throughout the USA, being with friends and family, and teaching his children and grandchildren how to water ski. Harry was also a voracious reader. He and Dorothy were very active in their church. Harry was a member of the American Legion and the VFW, the Rochester Rotary, the Builder’s Exchange, the Rochester Chamber of Commerce, the Dodge Room, and Locust Hill Country Club. He also served on the Board of Directors of McQuaid Jesuit High School. He is survived by his children: Richard (Barb) DeMay; Diane (Peter) Hammar; James (Karen) DeMay; son-in-law, William Hammond; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Vahue; brother, Norbert (Doris) DeMay; sister-in-law, Eleanor Alexander; and many nieces and nephews. Harry was predeceased by his loving wife of 58 years, Dorothy, his daughter, Patricia Hammond, and brothers: Ralph, David, and John DeMay. An 11 a.m. memorial Mass will be held Saturday, June 25, at St. Mary’s Church, 95 N. Main St. Canandaigua. Service arrangements have been entrusted to Fuller Funeral Home, Inc. Canandaigua.
