Obituary of Gary Muxworthy

Gary R. Muxworthy July 26, 1940 - December 31, 2012 South Bristol- Gary R. Muxworthy passed away at his home December 31, 2012. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Pam; children, Glenn (Elizabeth); Douglas (Christine Newman); Karin (Kent) Seavey; siblings, Kurt (Linda); Ross; Lyn Muxworthy (Terry Palmeter); Scott (Heather); grandchildren, Greta, Madison, Sophie, Gage and Rachael. Gary was born in Rochester to Ross and Helen Muxworthy and was the oldest of five children. He attended school in Irondequoit graduating from Irondequoit High School in 1959. After graduation he was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles to play in their farm system and played in the Florida State League for a season. He returned to New York and enrolled in SUNY Delhi from which he graduated in 1961. He and Pam met at Delhi, married in 1961 and returned to Irondequoit where Gary went to work in the family owned hardware business. During the 1960's Gary began to add sporting goods to the inventory at the hardware store and in the late 1960's Gary separated himself from the hardware and developed his ski, hockey and sporting goods business at the Irondequoit location. The business grew and at one point there were stores in Henrietta, The Ski Loft in Pittsford and area shops at Swain, Greek Peak and Snow Ridge. Gary was a tireless ambassador for the sport of skiing and helped numerous families get started in this great family sport. He sold the ski shops in 1984 and he and Pam moved to Steamboat Springs, Colorado where Gary opened a slope side restaurant called Steamin' Jacks. He loved to be the on site host and continued to be an ambassador for the skiing experience. In 1989 Gary returned to Rochester and reopened the Ski Loft. In an effort to create a year round business he started to carry outdoor furniture in the early 1990's. He and son Glenn continued to run the patio furniture business after they had sold the ski business to The Ski Company. Then Gary joined the Buffalo Sabres as Director of Sales and Marketing for the Rochester area. He loved his affiliation with the Sabres and after the team was sold he took friends advice and became a realtor associated with Keller Williams. He established the Muxy Shootout in the 1980's which helped raise money for various charities. In 2001, he dedicated the tournament in memory of life long friend Gene Polisseni which has helped create athletic scholarships for students attending St. John Fischer. Gary was also town councilman for the town of South Bristol, NY and was inducted into the Softball Hall of Fame. He will be greatly missed by his many friends and loving family.
