Obituary of George Gilbert

GEORGE H. GILBERT Former Holcomb resident George Gilbert, 91, died Wednesday, Mar. 20 at the Ontario County Health Facility. George was born in Canandaigua to the late John R. and Clara Gilbert. He was a graduate of Canandaigua Academy (1940) and the former Canandaigua School of Business. He served three years with the U.S. Army's 8th. Airforce in Great Britain during WW-2 and was discharged with the rank of Sergeant. George and his late wife Elsie were active members of the Holcomb community for many years. He was a member of Bloomfield Savage Post 970 American Legion, a life member of Milner Lodge F&AM in Victor, a life member of the East Bloomfield-Holcomb Volunteer Fire Department and a life and Charter Member of the Bloomfield Lions Club. George was also a member of the East Bloomfield-Holcomb Senior Citizens and was voted Ontario County's Senior Citizen of the Year. He served as mayor of the Village of Holcomb for eight years, served on the Village Board for 25 years and was a town assessor for 12 years. George was a member of the East Bloomfield Cemetery Board and served as an officer with and on the advisory board of the Ontario County Office of the Aging. He is survived by his children Susan & Gary Marvin, Canandaigua and Steven & Kathy Gilbert, Avon; 4 granddaughters; 4 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Elsie in 2012 and daughter Karen in 1973. There will be no prior calling hours. A memorial service will be held at the East Bloomfield United Methodist Church 2 Park Place, East Bloomfield, where George had been a member for many years, on Saturday, April 27 at 1:00 p.m. It has been suggested that memorials be directed to the East Bloomfield United Methodist Church or to the Bloomfield Public Library, BOX 158, East Bloomfield, NY 14443.
