I am a former member of the De La Salle brothers. James Caulfield taught me French in the juniorate and I chose him to be my sponsor when I took the habit of a Christian Brother. He was a man I admired and appreciated more than words can say. He was also my Director when I was in College in Washington. He helped me a great deal when I was struggling with some personal issues. I am sorry for your loss. I was fortunate to have known him.

I knew James as Brother Amian Bernard. He was my Director when I was a sophomore at De La Salle College. He was an absolute breath of fresh air from the strict supervision we had at La Salle Institute in Troy. He never looked like a "formal" Director: his robe never seemed to fit, his hair was rumpled, he spoke informally and colloquially, he often complained about the difficulty of learning the piano. But he was very supportive and encouraging to all of us as we adjusted to life in Washington, D. C. and to living with a large group of over 100 Brothers. He counseled us about becoming involved in public activities related to the Civil Rights movement, reminding us we had several responsibilities: to ourselves, our fellow Brothers, our studies, the world around us and above all to God. He delivered these messages with his usual informality and lack of solemnity and they were well received. I've thought of him often in the years after I left the Brothers and hoped he was content with his life and his choices. Please accept my sympathies on his passing. He truly had a positive effect on my life and many of my fellow Brothers.

The man I knew as Brother Amian Bernard had a wonderful influence upon my youth. He taught me French for two years in Barrytown and one year in Washington. Not only was he an extraordinary teacher, but he was also a significant role model. His humor, his interest in his students, his evident intelligence served as an example to those of us who chose to follow in his teaching profession. When I wanted to switch my major in college he was not only amenable but also demanding, demonstrating his balance between encouragement and emphasis upon criteria. May God reward him for his contributions to so many of us who knew him as a man, a teacher, and a model.

Known to me as Bernard, Jim was a gift to us young Brothers while we were in the Scholasticate in Washington. He always had a smile on his face and a kind word for us when things got difficult. He was such a kind human being, which made us aware that he always had our best interest at heart. Just by the way he lived, he led us to understand the human dimension of the religious life, and at that time it was an important discovery. So thanks Bernard for your kindness to me and all the young Brothers. Rest in the peace of the Lord, on this feast of St. John Baptist De La Salle

Barbara, Denise, Daniel - Jim and each of you are in our prayers. Your husband and dad was a gift not only to you but to so many people that he encountered. All, from many different backgrounds and circumstances, were blessed to have been directed, counseled or guided by him. May God continue to bless and embrace him.

Barbara, Daniel and Denise I truly loved this man. He was my French teacher in Barrytown from 1954 through 1956. He was a great teacher . At the end of our 1st year of French Jim had us take the 2nd year regents. I got a 89 grade. I had a rather strong tendency to blush and Jim found this out real quick. I would try to hide behind Joe McGowan so you know who would not find me. It never worked. I would hear this voice asking where is Richard Whalen hiding. He always found me. I would be beet red. I also went to Regina Coeli Church that both of you attended. I believe Daniel may have been in my sons class at Coeli. His name was Andrew. You might remember me walking up behind Jim and you and putting my arm around Jim. I told him that I never got over his missing and easy goal while we were playing ice hockey on the pond in Barrytown. I really did forgive him. After I left the Brothers in 1960 I had to call the director in the scholasticate in Washington D.C. The director was away and Jim was in charge. I had vows for 10 more days and needed permission to travel so Jim gave me the OK. Lots of wonderful memories !! Barbara and your family , please extend my sympathies to all of you. We lost a wonderful man. BnyJ4

Barbara and Family -
On behalf of Voluntary Service at the VA Medical Center, we send our sympathy.
Dr. Caulfield was a true gentleman; someone you could have a "real" conversation with and strong Veteran supporter. He will be missed.
