From my freshman to senior year in high school, Mr. VB was my second dad. I spent nearly as much time at the VB house as I did my own, and he always made me feel like part of the family. In the 30+ years since, I got to know even better the kind, creative, funny, even silly man that he was. It was always a treat when I got to say hello, whether I was stopping by when visiting Jeff, a quick hi on the phone or briefly catching up on facetime. Even though years would go by that I wouldn't see him, I was still part of the family. It is a happier world for his having been here.
My love to all of you. I am there in my heart.

Despite never having met Howie in person, I feel like I have known him for years. Jeff VanBuren and I have been dear friends for years, so I have heard many stories about his Dad, and his entire family. It is abundantly clear that this is a family rooted in compassion, love and kindness. These values continue through their children, and everyone their lives touch.
I am lucky to have known Howie, if only through stories and the occasional phone call. He will continue to live on through his family's warmth, kindness and joy.

Dear Mrs. Van Buren and Family,
I was so saddened to hear of your loss.
I so admire the creative talent of Mr. Van Buren because I don't have much of that myself but wish I did, what a wonderful gift to be able to share.
Jeff felt so much love and support from his dad and mom. He wanted to spend as much time with his dad as possible, so glad he got the opportunity to do so.
I'm so sorry for your loss. Wishing you all peace and love.

Although I never met Mr. Van Buren I feel as if I know what kind of man he was, because of all loving things I have heard about him from Jeff through the years. He clearly was incredibly strong, wise and open hearted, just one of a kind. To have a dad like him is such a blessing. I know how much he was loved, that is for sure! I am so very sorry for your loss, and I know it is going to be very hard for all of you. But he would want you all to keep your love for him strong in your hearts to comfort you as go through this painful time, and always. I am so deeply sorry for all of you, Mrs. Van Buren, and all your family. You are all in my thoughts.

Jeff is one of my closest friends, and as a result I knew Howard simply as “Dad.” I have been lucky to spend time with the whole family on several occasions. One of my favorite memories is driving out to Canandaigua from Syracuse with Jeff to celebrate his birthday with the family. It was right around Valentines Day as Jeff’s birthday is February 15, and Dad presented me with a chocolate rose when we arrived! Jeff and I go to a lot of SU basketball games together, and we would always send pictures to Dad while we were there because we knew he was cheering on the Orange from home. He was a generous and loving man, and the evidence of that lives on in his children. I feel so privileged to have known him. Sending love to the whole family.

Dear VanBuren family:
I did not know your beloved husband, father and grandfather, but I heard all about him from his wonderful son, Jeff! I have really never met someone who loves, and speaks about his family, as much as Jeff does!
It is clear that Howard was an amazing man who brought much love and joy to others throughout his life! I know that he has brought me joy through his paintings even though I never met him!
I am praying for your comfort at this unimaginably difficult time. I pray that the wonderful memories you all have, are enough to sustain you until you should all meet again!
Much peace and love to you all.
Trista

Pop pop was my favorite. I remember when him and grandma used to babysit me and i remember me and him coloring together, and me and him playing piano together. I remember how happy he would get when i called him on the phone, and seeing him light up with joy when i would visit from Michigan. He was the best grandpa i could ask for.

I met Howard in 1977 as a college student working part time in the art department at GE. Amid the tasks associated with a fast paced publishing office, I learned many things including design, typography and sign lettering. These became my passion as I moved through my career. I was blessed to have a mentor take my under his wing and share the things he loved to do. I will always love how much he shared with me.

Joelle and Pop would color for hours and bicker over crayon colors and what colors should be for certain things. They would also sit for hours at the piano singing and playing all sorts of learning songs and school songs and songs from the good old days. She loved her Pop Pop

I didn't know him as Howard I knew him as my uncle juju. I have so many memories of him when I was growing up. My sister gave him the name juju. I remember him making us fried bologna sandwiches and catching the pan on fire and he made it seem like it was part of making lunch instead of almost burning our house down. I remember going to the state fair and he would walk around pointing up in the air and all the people looking up when there was nothing there. I loved his story about hitting a goose with his car and calling the state police to report a hit and run. I think I inherited his sense of humor. He always made you smile. Uncle juju I hope you are on the train with Donna, mom and aunt tinky shouting sanitaria springs. I hope you can see the beauty surrounding you and I hope you get to paint what heaven looks like. Miss you and love you uncle juju. Judy s
