Obituary of Virginia R. Avery

Virginia Roberts Avery passed away peacefully on November 28, 2020 at the age of 94. Virginia was predeceased by her husband James Avery, her sister Betty Stevens, and her grandson Benjamin Quayle. She is survived by her sister Peggy Sheldon, daughter Babs (Phil) VanTroost, son Christopher (Wendy) Avery, Granddaughter Amanda (Nate) West, great grandchildren Madelyn Quayle, Lila, Jack, and Owen West, and many nieces and nephews. Virginia was born in Rochester, NY in 1926 to Supreme Court Justice and Mrs. Carroll M. Roberts. She was a graduate of Endicott College in Beverly MA in 1946. She was employed at Rochester radio stations WSAY and WARC as traffic manager. In 1951 she married Attorney James A. Avery and moved to Canandaigua NY. Virginia was a Sunday school teacher at St. John's Episcopal Church. In 1955 she was a player and director in the Canandaigua Group Players. In 1952 she became Executive Secretary of the West Ontario County chapter of the American Red Cross. She was a past board member of the YMCA and treasurer of the Hospital Guild. Virginia was an avid golfer and a member of the Canandaigua Country Club. She was a past president of the Board of Directors at the Country Club from 1979-1981. She was also a member of the Current Events Club for over 60 years. Virginia(Da) had a love for life, an infectious sense of humor, and was a joy to everyone she met. She loved taking her great grandchildren for rides in her golf cart, chasing them with spray bottles of whipped cream, and was always up for an adventure. If there was any activity or sport her kids or grandkids were into, she would jump right in. She will be greatly missed by all and forever in our hearts.
