Obituary of Norma E. Updyke
Canandaigua- Norma Updyke passed away October 11, 2021 at Penn Yan Manor.
Norma received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Marymount College, Tarrytown, NY. She worked with a team of Swiss designers on a corporate identification program for Corning Glass. She continued as a product director at Geigy Corporation in Ardsley, graphic designer at American Heritage Publishers, NYC, project director at Sangren & Murtha and did packaging design at Sterling Drug which took product design from #8 in the marketplace to #2 with her design. At Dellwood Dairy, she re-color coded product packaging with award-winning design. Norma's firm, Studio 26, was selected by Carquest Corporation to develop a family image in their packaging of automotive parts. Product sales increased 35% nationally. Tokyo design magazine, IDEA, in a special edition on 8 USA independent graphic designers, highlighted eight pages of Norma's designs. After retirement, Norma joined the Riolo real estate group in Hastings-on-Hudson.
Norma was born on May 20, 1932, the daughter of Edwin Owen Updyke and Dorothy Congdon Updyke. She is survived and will be missed by her sister, Gretchen Updyke Kesel and brother-in-law, Harold Kesel, nephews, Scott (Regina) Kesel, Jeffrey (Mary Beth) Kesel, and Martin (Jean Ferris) Kesel. Also, Norma's grand nephews and nieces, Jordan (Danielle), Jesse, Justin (Aubrey), Collin, Sarah (Ben) Hartson, Stephen Craven, Erin, Evan, Derek, Jack, and Nick, and great grand nephews and nieces are Abram, Patrick, Lola, McKenna, Harry, and Ross.
Norma enjoyed skiing, kayaking, travel, family and friends in Canandaigua, Hastings-on-Hudson and Elmira. Her surviving cat, Sonny, has a lovely new home.
The family wishes to thank special home care by family and others, the wonderful staff at Thompson Hospital as well as the loving staff at Penn Yan Manor for compassion and care of Norma and all of us.
