Brian's Eulogy
As I’m sure most of you know, I’m Heather. I’m Brian’s wife…Well, I’m Brian’s widow, but I’m not ready to accept that title yet…so I’ll just be Brian’s wife a while longer.
Just to share a bit of background on how we met, just before my birthday in the year 2000, I found myself at work at 9 o’clock on a Friday night feeling rather bleary eyed. So, I took a break for a vending machine dinner and called my girlfriend, Laura. Laura mentioned The Haze Brothers Band was playing at a local bar and that we should go out. I wasn’t sure I liked that idea - I had work to do, but I agreed to a cup of coffee at her house and figured I could go back to work to finish up after my coffee break. On the way to Laura’s house, I had the radio on in the car and as I was listening to the music and thinking about the band playing, I decided that I was too young and too single to be at work on a Friday night. So, once I got to Laura’s, we headed out to catch the band…
When we got there, we grabbed a spot next to the dance floor and within moments, in walked Brian. Well, Laura used to work with Brian so when she saw him, she waved him over. The night that we met, Brian and I spent the better part of the evening trying to chat over the band and dancing together. He was so charming and so good looking…I couldn’t believe how drawn I was to him. He was magic! …at the end of the night, I took his number and promised to call.
And call I did! We spent hours on the phone … talking about everything…I couldn’t believe how genuine he was…how many stories he was willing to share…how certain he was of who he was and what he wanted out of life. He seemed like a mythical creature to me…a Prince Charming, if you will. So fast forward about 5,000 hours of phone conversations later (which translates to about six months later) and I knew Brian was special and I was all in!
Now as many of you know, unlike me, Brian is not to be rushed into anything. He is so painstakingly thorough in his consideration of any decision…In fact, I have a cute “Brian Story” about how hard decisions can be for him…Brian and I were out to a restaurant for dinner with my family…because it was a special occasion, there were LOTS of us there….and believe me when I tell you, I hail from a very large family! So, it’s Brian’s turn to order and he can’t decide which salad dressing he’d like. It quickly becomes apparent to everyone that he needs a minute, so the waitress offers to circle back for his dressing choice. She finishes taking everyone’s orders…and remember LARGE family so it took a minute ….she comes back to Brian. He hmmms and haws a bit and I’m growing concerned that my big, boisterous family is going to start harassing him….and then, in his oh-so-sincere, adorable Brian-way, he explains that he really wants something creamy and delicious but he just can’t decide which dressing to choose. Well, with that, the whole group broke out in laughter.
So, this man who hates to rush into any decision…after 13 wonderful years of togetherness later…finally decides it might be okay if we got married…and that, my friends, is how Heather Clark got to be the luckiest woman on Earth to become Heather Antonelli!
And living with Brian was such a blessing! He was neat. He was considerate. He paid his bills. He took out the trash…He made the bed every morning. In fact, once Brian retired, he even packed my breakfast and lunch for me each day before I went to work!!
And we did everything together…Everything….on purpose and with intention! In fact, he often said that he chose to be in a relationship with me…and that meant spending his time with me…not off running around with other people. And, trust me, Brian’s words and Brian’s actions always matched….it was one of his most rare and admirable qualities.
But, I’ve got to tell you, because Brian was such a gentle person, rarely did anyone believe me when I’d speak of the steel beneath the softness…the incredibly unbendable will that was Brian Antonelli! Everyone got to see the compassionate, caring, gentle soul that would listen to your cares and celebrate your successes. But those closest to Brian knew, and those who shared his journey soon discovered, that Brian was a seriously determined man…
For those who are not aware, Brian named his tumor Milo after a nasty little monster in a B movie that he’d seen after his cancer diagnosis. His battle with Milo spanned nearly six years…In fact, Milo took Brian’s life earlier this year in April…but Brian, as determined as he was, was not done living life. He needed more time…so with the help of my dearest friends at Thompson Hospital, he stole his life back from Milo and fought like hell to keep it….
It took amazing “strength of character” and a “steel will”, in my opinion, for Brian to remain faithful to himself and his convictions …throughout his treatment; through his search for options after it seemed there weren’t any left and through his acceptance that treatment must end so that he could continue living his life or what would be left of it.
But, believe me, Brian never gave up. He didn’t even know how to. Those that know Brian, know THAT about him! Brian had a tenacity rivaled by none! Brian never gave up on his friends – even when others would; he never gave up on his family – even when we needed more than he had to give; and he never gave up on God – Brian knew God had a plan for him! Brian just never gave up!
I am hopeful that there is some solace to be found knowing that Brian lived and died just as he did everything… His way! He lived with HOPE! And he died in PEACE! And he went with a beautiful Brian smile on his face hand in hand with me by his side…
I love you so very much, Brian! Until we are reunited, I pray you REST… in PEACE!!
