Obituary of Klaus Leo Buxbaum

K. Leo Buxbaum, born December 17, 1931 in Griesheim, Germany, died in Whittier, California on March 12, 2023 after a brief illness. The family moved to Canandaigua in 1944, where his father, Henry, was a general practitioner until his death in 1979. His mother, Hermine, died in Canandaigua in 1988. Leo was a 1949 graduate of Canandaigua Academy, attended Cornell University and graduated from the University Of Rochester School Of Medicine in 1956. He was a gastroenterologist, a pioneer in the use of fiber optics gastroscopy, and for 25 years Chief of Gastroenterology at Whittier Presbyterian Hospital in Whittier, California. After his retirement he was an Adjunct Clinical Professor at the University Of Southern California School Of Medicine. Leo remained connected to Canandaigua throughout his life, frequently visiting his friends there and spending time at the family's lakeside property. He is survived by his wife, Frances; his sons Charles (Natasha) and James (Katrina); grandchildren Lily, Katya, Julia, Ruby and Molly; brother Richard Buxbaum; sister Ruth Kadish; numerous nephews and nieces; and the family's longtime friend and link to Canandaigua, Marjorie Donhauser. The funeral service will be held March 22 at 11 AM at the Canandaigua First United Methodist Church, 100 North Main Street, followed by interment in the family plot at Woodlawn Cemetery.
