Obituary of Muriel Allen
Muriel (Mickey) Allen, 95, of Canandaigua, NY passed away on June 12, 2023 at Thompson Hospital.
Mickey was born in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England to Albert and Doris Woodward on August 20, 1927.
She is predeceased by her parents, beloved husband, Francis J. Allen, sister, Wendy Clarke, brother, Warren (June) Woodward, and son, Keith Allen.
She is survived by her children, Malcom (Nancy) Allen, Sandy (Jim) Roth, granddaughter, Tonya Griffin, brother-in-law, Alan Clarke, and many nieces and nephews in England and the United States.
She served in the Women's Land Army in Great Britain during WWII, during which time she met her husband, Francis, an American G.I. stationed near her hometown. They were married in England on January 24, 1948 and Mickey relocated to the United States shortly after. Mickey was an active member of the Transatlantic Brides and Parents Association in Canandaigua. She was also a member of the Rebekah Lodge (the women's branch of the Odd Fellow's Organization) where she served as Noble Grand. The Rebekah Lodge was a service-oriented group that participated in many charitable activities in the Canandaigua area. Mickey served as a Den Mother with the Cub Scouts when her son was young. The most important membership in her life was as a faithful parishioner at the First United Methodist Church of Canandaigua. Mickey worked as a cook for most of life, starting in the Women's Land Army, then at Brigham Hall (later named the Grove Home), and ending at Ontario County Meals-on-Wheels, where she worked until her retirement at 70 years old. While her husband was alive, they operated a successful ceramics shop on Bemis Street (now Casa de Pasta), where she helped teach ceramic classes. After her retirement, she was a volunteer for the University of Rochester, assisting with clerical tasks on a national research project based at the Canandaigua VA. She loved to read, especially biographies and the Bible, which she read every night before bed. Mickey adored animals and had pets throughout her life. She donated to many animal welfare organizations, as well as health care charities locally and nationally. Mickey cherished her home, family, friends, companion animals, as well as her citizenship in the United States.
