Peter Hurlbutt

Obituary of Peter E. Hurlbutt

Peter "Pete" Hurlbutt, 80, passed away on Sunday, July 2nd, 2023, surrounded by his family at home in Canandaigua. He was diagnosed with IPF (Ideopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis) in 2021 and it tragically took his life. Despite this disease, Pete focused on his family and his faith. He made meaningful memories with loved ones right until his last breath. Peter graduated from Canandaigua Academy in 1960. At the age of 18 he went to work for Kordite, which eventually became known as Mobil Chemical. Pete retired from Mobil Chemical in 1996, after 36 years of service. He was a natural leader at work as well as in his personal life. Fondly known as "Coach Pete" for many years, he tirelessly coached youth ice hockey. Both Pete's son and daughter had the privilege to play for him on some of the various teams he coached. In his later years, those leadership skills served him well, as he enjoyed facilitating Bible study groups. Peter's interpretation of God's Word was presented in a genuine, down to earth, and understandable way. Many people have come to know God in a deeper way, because of Peter's passionate ability to make the Bible relatable. Peter was an avid fisherman his whole life. He was a competitor and won many bass tournaments not just in New York State, but Oklahoma and Alabama. He loved being on the lakes; fishing by himself or with another lucky person, such as his son, daughter, or a multitude of friends. Many considered him "a fishing legend", but he would never admit to that. Peter's father instilled in him the quality of being humble, and he abided by that his whole life. Pete was also a natural athlete in high school, and he enjoyed various sports throughout his life. Despite being competitive, he equally enjoyed teaching other people skills. Whether this was how stick handle a hockey puck, hit a baseball, spike a volleyball, or cast a spinnerbait along a weed line, Pete enjoyed connecting with other people in this way. His diverse interests allowed him to inspire and positively impact many people's lives, whether he was on the lake or in a church. If you were near him, you could feel the intensity of his passion! Peter was a compassionate, kind, strong, devoted, and loving man. He was big in stature, but his heart and caring personality were even bigger. He loved Jesus and wanted the whole world to know that there is Hope in following Him through the promises of the Bible. Peter is survived by his wife of 60 years, Grace Arnold Hurlbutt; two children, Colleen (Jim) Johnston, Derek (Tammy) Hurlbutt; four grandchildren, James Johnston (Amanda Cline), Lindsey Johnston, Paige Reed, Jourdan Hurlbutt; sister, Barbara (Ray) Henry; sisters in law, Gail Arnold, Carol Arnold, a large extended family and many friends. He was predeceased by his parents Ernest and Ruth Wiedrick Hurlbutt. Please join us for calling hours from 10am-11am at Fuller Funeral Home, 190 Buffalo Street, Canandaigua, NY.
