To Laurel's family: I came to know Laurel when Mark Stash of Life in the Finger Lakes magazine assigned her to write a review about a children's book I had self-published. What started out to be a review became a 5-page article in LIFL. Laurel was a joy to work with. When she learned that the book was a fund-raiser to help create a new shelter for a local SPCA in Bath NY, she made it a point to visit the site and interview the executive director and communicate with my illustrator. Her article was comprehensive and accurate and heart-warming, and it led to at least $1000 in donations to the SPCA.
When i wrote to Mark more than a year ago to tell him we were publishing a second children's book, Mark didn't even write me back -- he just sent my email to Laurel! The second book was a fund-raiser for the local hospice organization that had helped me care for my wife when she was terminally ill and for a comfort care home in Corning started by a high school friend and her family. Again Laurel was wonderful to work with, and again she created a marvelous 5-page article for LIFL which was thoroughly researched, comprehensive, accurate and heart-warming. It was a shock to learn of her death through Mark's tribute in LIFL, my copy of which arrived in the mail today. It was striking to me that she passed away in a comfort care home, having helped last year with our project which supports such a home.
I stayed in touch with Laurel via email after both articles and updated her on how the projects were going. She was so pleased to know that the first book raised over $40,000 to help complete the SPCA shelter (2500 of the books are now in print), and the second book has already raised over $10,000 for the two hospice-related agencies. And Laurel helped make all that possible!
I send my sympathies to everyone in the family at the loss of such a kind, thoughtful, gifted and delightful soul.

I am so saddened to learn of Laurel's passing. She was a wonderful colleague and important advocate for historic preservation in our region, through her many articles in newspapers and Finger Lakes magazine. When I was on staff at The Landmark Society of Western NY, I alsways welcomed her emails & phoen calls about local preservation projects, ranging from endangered properties needing assistance to preservation success stories deserving wider recognition. I will so miss her enthusiast support for her work, and the community has lost an important journalist deeply committed to our region. I am so saddened to hear of Laurel’s passing. We were high school classmates and long time friends. She was also one of my bridesmaids at my wedding in 1965. Laurel and I exchanged Christmas cards each year and would try to get together whenever I was in the Canandaigua area. She was a wonderfully kind, talented, giving person. She will be so missed!

After completing rigorous training, Laurel volunteered as a docent for the Memorial Art Galley (1987-1990). She regularly arranged a field trip for her FLCC art history students to introduce them to this world-class collection in Rochester.

It has been quite some time since I last saw Laurel, and I didn't know about her poor health. Laurel and I met through Literacy Volunteers. She was a champion for literacy, kind and patient. I would also see her at FLCC where I, too, was employed. Laurel was always cordial and pleasant, a lovely lady with multiple talents and interests. Rest in peace, Laurel.
