Obituary of Janet E. VanGelder

Janet VanGelder, a lifelong resident of Canandaigua, passed away peacefully after a long battle with dementia at St. Ann’s Home in Rochester on August 21, 2024. Janet grew up on Wood Street, graduated from Canandaigua Academy. She was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Church where she volunteered in the voucher room for St. Vincent de Paul Society, she also loved baking cakes for fundraisers. No one could knit or crochet like Janet. She enjoyed making the most beautiful afghans and she took pleasure in gifting them. Later in life she attended Nazareth University to further her education. Most of her professional years she worked at RIT and Ontario County as a computer programmer. Janet was a kind and caring person who would do anything for anyone. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Janet is predeceased by her mother, Helen Irene Stone; stepfather, Clifford Stone; grandmother, Helen Maxon; uncle, Archie Maxon; sister, Joanne Ringquist; brother, Gordon VanGelder Sr.; nephew, Alan Rowe; sister-in-law, Carole VanGelder; beloved dog, Maggie. Survived by sisters, Helen Rowe, Linda Stone, Karen (Richard) Steamer, Andrea Stone; niece and nephews, Kelly (Marc LaSalle) Steamer, Richard Steamer ll, Christopher (Holly) Steamer; special great niece and nephews, Parker Shannon, Sydney and Austin LaSalle; nieces and nephews, Mark (Leslie) Rowe, Susan (Stephen Manuele) VanGelder, Andrea (Michael) O’Sullivan, Gordon (Christine) VanGelder, Colleen (Michael) Collins; several additional great nieces and nephews. We would like to thank the staff at St. Ann’s Home for their amazing care and kindness during Janet’s stay.
