Canandaigua, NY-Samuel Clyde Jones passed peacefully on Friday, May 2, 2014 in his home in Canandaigua, N.Y. at the age of 99 years.
He and his wife moved to Canandaigua 7 years ago to be near their daughter, Betty Lou. Before moving here they had lived in Antwerp, NY for 60 years where they raised their family.
He is survived by his loving wife of 71years, Betty; his two daughters and their husbands, Betty Lou and Dan Palmeri of Canandaigua, Mary Jane (Midge) and Ken Pellegrino of Brookfield, Ct and his son and wife, Sam and Bobbi Jones of Greene, N.Y., seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He is also survived by his uncle Howell Clark, his cousins Allegra, Georgia Carol, and Guinn Jones and his nephew Jerry Lee Kirks. He was pre-deceased by his sister, Lottie Kirks and nephew Bobby Kirks.
Born January 9, 1915, in Murray, Kentucky, son of the late Henry Lee and Emly Clark Jones. He graduated from Faxon High School in 1933 and from Murray State College. He taught at Bandana High School in Bandana, KY, until his induction into the army in May 1941.
He was first stationed at Pine Camp, N.Y. later named Fort Drum, NY. In 1942 he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. He was sent to the Pacific theater with the 457th Field Artillery Division of the 11th Airborne from May 1943 to November 1945. He was awarded the Silver Star for bravery under fire. He also received two Bronze Stars and was honorably discharged from the service in February 1946 as a Captain. In 2011 he was chosen to participate in the Honor Flight as a World War II veteran.
He met his wife, Betty Gates, while stationed in Pine Camp, NY on a blind date and married her on October 9th, 1942 in Columbus, GA at the Presbyterian Church by Rev. Calvin Reid.
Mr. Jones joined the teaching staff at Antwerp Public School in 1946 and was principal of that school for three years. In 1959 he started as Math teacher at Indian River Central School in Philadelphia, NY. After teaching for thirty years he retired in 1976. He worked summers with the United States Customs Service.
During his 60 years in Antwerp he was very active in the community. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Antwerp, a Deacon of the church and superintendent of the Sunday School for several years. He was a member and a Master of the Masonic Lodge 226 and also served as District Deputy Grand Master of the Jefferson-Lewis District. He was a member and past president of the Rotary Club and a 50-year member of the American Legion 916. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America and was a member of the Crosby Library Association and a member of the Hillside Cemetery Association. He was also a member of the American Contract Bridge League.
A Memorial Service will be held this July at the Antwerp Congregational Church in Antwerp, NY. Burial will be in the Antwerp Hillside Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of Fuller Funeral Home, Inc. Canandaigua.
